Ex-Memphis Officers Stood by Tyre Nichols' 'Dying Body' and Laughed, Prosecutor Says

Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clarke made the allegation Wednesday against the five ex-officers charged in connection with the deadly arrest.

The officers are charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 10 arrest of Nichols, who was Black. They also face other charges, including aggravated assault and official misconduct.

According to Clarke, the officers "stood by as Mr. Nichols lay on the ground, suffering," and "failed to provide him with the medical attention he desperately needed." She said the officers "mocked him and laughed" as he lay dying.

Clarke's allegations came during a news conference in Washington, D.C., where she announced the federal charges against the officers.
